My Spring Impressions

I arrived home late last night after four days in Phoenix in baseball heaven. For those of you who have never gone down to the Cactus League, I highly recommend it. Unlike in Florida,?most of the Cactus League teams are grouped close together, making it easy for fans to check-out a large number of teams and games with relative ease. I spent my four days going back-and-forth between the A??s major league and minor league spring camps, and I came away very impressed with the future of this organi

Depth Charges

Though very little mystery remains for what the Indians?? 25-man roster figures to look like out of Spring Training, much of the talk and debate coming out of Winter Haven has centered around Ben Francisco??s bid to make the club as well as the very real concern that David Dellucci may not be able to rebound from a dreadful and injury-marred 2007 campaign. If results in Spring Training are the overriding factor in who makes the team out of Winter Haven, there really is no comparison between the tw

Discombobulated Way to Open a Season The 2008 major league baseball season opens in Japan next Tuesday at 6:05 AM Eastern time when the A's and Red Sox play Tuesday and Wednesday at the same time both days. I understand that the two teams need time to recover from such a long trip before opening the season but can't understand why 75 exhibition games would be played after the opening game of the season. To me this seems like a very discombobulated way to open a season since after the

Sox in '08 trying to avoid another '06

Fresh off the team??s second World Series title in the last four years, I implore Sox fans not to forget 2006. Need I remind you it was only two years ago that Boston failed to make the post-season, winning only 86 games and finishing 3rd yes, 3rd in the American League East. While the team??s batting average was about ten points lower in ??06 than last year??s title team, the 2006 club swatted 26 more homeruns paced by David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez, who combined for almost 100 bombs between them.

Final Spring Results: The A's Won and?Lost

After a terribly traumatic morning, when the opening day trip to Japan was in very real jeopardy for a few moments finally solved by the Red Sox threatening to boycott Japan unless their coaches were paid for the trip a nice guesture, I thought, the A's took the field against the Angels and the Cubs, with Harden making one start, and Blanton the other. Harden was assigned the loss, but pitched very well on his 90 pitch limit throwing 6 innings, 8 hits, 2 ER, 1BB, 4K. Keith Foulke 'reliev

Trading Dan Haren allowed the A??s to restock their farm system, but opened a huge hole in the rotation. AP Kudos to the Oakland A??s for immediately recognizing that their great run of eight straight winning seasons ?? including five post-season appearances ?? was coming to an end last season. Instead of throwing good money at bad money, this team stripped itself of key assets like 15-game winner Dan Haren, Nick Swisher and Mark Kotsay, bringing in a boatload of quality prospects who immediat

AP Photo THE REAL WORLD: Every so often reality intrudes on the fantasy land of sports, and yesterday it barged in with a sobering thud. Rhode Island's Rocco Baldelli told the Tampa media in a morning press conference he would be sidelined indefinitely because of a rare, and as-yet untreated, condition called metabolic and/or mitochondrial abnormalities, which causes severe fatigue and muscle cramping and has been at the root at his constant string of injuries over the last three years. Eveland Strong, Gaudin Storms the Hill

The A's are now 15-5 in the spring thanks to a strong start by Dana Eveland again, further cementing his case for the fifth starter spot. The only real problem Eveland has seemingly had this spring is his inability to avoid the walks. Other than that, he's been pretty darn good in stating his case for that spot in the rotation. Chad Gaudin also made his first appearance of the spring and pitched two scoreless innings with one strikeout. He didn't allow a hit or a walk. As a matter of fact

What was a fairly competitive game for 7 innings quickly turned into a route as soon as one Jeff Williams stepped on the mound for the Hanshin Tigers. Spring Training Spurt Spurs Starry-Eyed?Optimism

We're only now coming down off our baseball high from the all-too-short visit to this magical land of green and gold paradise known as Phoenix Municipal Stadium in Phoenix. From Friday to Monday, my wife and I saw the A's play four games, and they could seemingly do no wrong - winning all four contests, often by huge margins. The team's pitchers made the opposition look like Little Leaguers, and the entire lineup, from the few veterans on the team to the virtual unknowns, knocked out hits like
