Baystate Objectivist

A sampling. What is now known as Tommy Devine's Online Journal existed for seven years as a print publication before it went online in 1998 to become the Pioneer Valley's first blog. In print form, it was called The Baystate Objectivist, a term that was originally intended as a spoof of serious sounding media publications, back at the beginning when myself and Baystate Objectivist co-founder Jay Libardi first envisioned the Baystate Objectivist as a local political humor "zine." More Polito

The photo record. When I was writing about Jim Polito recently, I was surprised by how difficult it was to come up with a photo of Jim to use in my story. In the end I couldn't find one, and had to go instead with a generic picture of the WGGB headquarters on Liberty Street in Springfield. Amazingly, for someone whose face once saturated the media, Polito has become an almost Orwellian non-person about whom no physical image can be found. A big part of the problem is that most of the images a

Power and Gallagher take Crusoe to NBC

Last year it was reported that Power will become the first British production company to make a drama series for a US Network for more than 40 years, after NBC ordered 13 episodes of Robinson Crusoe. The budget for the 13-episode series is said to be about 35 million. NBC/UMS's portion is estimated to be about 10 million, for which NBC gets domestic rights to "Crusoe." Power, which will shoulder the rest of the cost, gets international distribution rights. The deal gives NBC a series for a l

TV Viewership Down Due To WGA Strike

The WGA strike has resulted in a drop in TV viewing and a big increase in people watching DVDs and video games. According to a survey released Thursday from new-media consultancy company Interpret, TV viewership has suffered because of the strike, particularly for dramas and sitcoms. Interpret finds that 27% of respondents are spending less time watching network series and 12% are watching less cable and satellite series. Conversely, 43% of respondents say they are spending more time watchin

Anthony Minghella: 1954-2008

Anthony Minghella, a WGGB member for the past twenty years, has died at the age of 54. Although he won an Oscar for directing The English Patient, Minghella always said that he saw himself, first and foremost, as a writer. Indeed, he adapted the screenplay for The English Patient from Michael Ondaatje??s novel. He began his career writing for the stage, and went on to write plays including Whale Music, Two Planks And A Passion, Love Bites and Made In Bangkok. Minghella first worked in televisi

The Guild goes to Downing Street

On the WGGB website, Guild TV Committee Chair, Gail Renard, reports from a reception for women in trade unions held at Number 11 Downing Street. Olivia Hetreed reported that the Film Council did research on why there are so few women scriptwriters in film - proportionately less than in TV, which is far from equal. The research showed that more women than men go to the cinema in the UK and therefore talk of not writing for the audience is misguided. Indeed films written by women do better at the

Ravosa Was Right

Another flashback. It's hard with the distance of time to recall just how vilified former Springfield City Councilor Anthony Ravosa Jr. was in the 1990's when he single handidly waged war on Springfield's corrupt Democrat Party machine. The level of attack on Ravosa by the powers that be was merciless, and sadly, Ravosa was unable to hold up under the assault. Ironically, in later years Ravosa himself got caught up as a minor figure in the Enron scandal. Yet in matters involving his political

Beyond Fired

Post television. Like all good media mavens, I've taken an interest in the firing of local investigative reporter Jim Polito by WGGB-TV Channel 40 last December. Part of my interest is personal, I used to go to WGGB quite a bit as both fill-in host and guest of The Dan Yorke Show and so I know some of the people involved personally. Also, Director Kathy Tobin was a frequent guest of ours when I used to do The Reporter's Roundtable starring Kateri Walsh on WHYN. New station owner John Gormal

Breakfast With Polito

Off the record. This morning I had breakfast at good ol' Jake's in downtown Northampton. Jake's has been around as long as I can remember. I used to eat there with my co-partiers every morning after all night stoner film festivals at the Calvin Theater next door. Usually I was coming down on psychedelics, which was fine as long as I didn't look at the food too closely, lest I see paisly designs on the pancakes and squiggly things in the orange juice. It was the reverse of what William S. Bur

There will only be a Press Conference for the Golden Globes - no red carpet and all the other trappings as the WGA strike lengthens and threatens to cast a shadow on the Oscars ceremony scheduled for Feb 22.
